Founded in 1979, the Indiana Writers Center (IWC) is a community of writers of all levels working in an atmosphere where they can create, learn, teach, experiment, publish, and thrive. Access to successful working writers through the IWC’s programs provides basic education for beginning writers and offers ongoing instruction, support, and encouragement to those already on the path. IWC is committed to providing writing programs in a vibrant, creative environment which encourages, supports, empowers and celebrates voices in all of their sounds, colors and shapes. By embracing these myriad ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds, we fulfill our mission of amplifying voices rarely heard through the written word.
Each year we offer more than 75 single session and multi-session writing workshops on craft in fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, playwriting, hybrid forms, creative process, the business of writing, and more. Our outreach programs, such as Building a Rainbow (a summer learning program for youth) and the Memoir Project help to amplify voices who are rarely heard. Partnerships with Indianapolis Marion County Public Library and other community-serving organizations help to increase access to our classes, programs, and Indiana writers. We offer our programs online and in community settings.
Awarded the inaugural Literary Champion Award by the Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Awards
2020, the IWC continues to be recognized as the only comprehensive creative writing center of its kind in Indiana, or even the Midwest. For more than 40 years the IWC has offered support for Indiana writers of all levels by providing literary programs, opportunities, community, resources, and education.
